MAN and SOS Children’s Villages – strong partners

The partnership between SOS Children’s Villages and MAN has been in place for more than seven years. It all started with a vocational training center in Ethiopia. From this seed, a strong partnership has grown in Germany and around the world, fostering the education and well-being of children and young people through rapid emergency assistance and jointly planned initiatives.

We can make the most valuable contributions to projects that relate to our core business areas. Our activities focus on long-term and sustainable education projects for children and young people. Working with a strong partner like SOS Children’s Villages is the best way to meet our goal.

We carefully select each project in dialog with SOS Children’s Villages so we can familiarize ourselves with the actual needs and provide long-term and sustainable assistance.

Transparency – a value we share

MAN and SOS Children’s Villages not only share the goal of offering children and young people the chance to shape a better life for themselves, but also take the same approach towards tackling the challenges that face society. Just like MAN, SOS Children’s Villages places great value on transparency. While MAN publishes a corporate responsibility report each year, SOS Children’s Villages regularly issues an annual report which transparently outlines the organization’s activities and use of donations. For many years now, the Central German Institute for Social Questions (Deutsches Zentralinstitut für soziale Fragen, DZI) has awarded SOS Children’s Villages in Germany its DZI donation certificate, attesting that donations are used economically and efficiently.

Furthermore, MAN and SOS Children’s Villages aim to get involved where their help will have maximum effect. That is why we are working on a methodology that will allow us to measure the effectiveness of our projects even more accurately in the future.

MAN employees – showing they care

We are especially proud of our employees. Showing their personal dedication, they lend a helping hand in the SOS Children’s Villages facilities supported by MAN – in Germany and around the globe. Their many contributions have become as diverse as the children and young people they help. By volunteering time, donating money, and sharing expertise, we actively live a partnership that makes a real difference.

Persönliches Engagement

In Munich, Nuremberg, Augsburg, and Salzgitter, our employees are personally active in a variety of SOS Children’s Villages projects. MAN values their dedication, and grants them a half-day of extra vacation each year for this purpose.

But many employees devote even more time to volunteer activities. For example, some get involved in school mentoring programs, helping disadvantaged children with their schoolwork once a week and improving their educational prospects. Others help with landscaping projects or organize summer festivals. Each year vocational trainees from MAN Salzgitter transform the local SOS Mothers’ Center into a Christmas village where children and their mothers can bake and do arts and crafts during Advent.

As part of the community outreach program at the family and daycare center in the Neuaubing neighborhood of Munich, MAN employees also lend a hand at many different events – organizing summer festivals, baking with the children, or doing yard work. The center serves as a multicultural, welcoming and multigenerational meeting place for the entire family.

Financial aid – donations from MAN and its employees

At the MAN Family Day at the Salzgitter site, our employees donated the proceeds of the raffle – totaling €6,000 – for the “green classroom,” a place in the countryside where the children can study in peace and quiet. MAN had already provided the €21,000 needed to set up the “green classroom” at the SOS Mothers’ Center in Salzgitter and hire a qualified employee to run educational activities.

MAN SE employees donated more than €2,000 to the SOS Family Assistance and Support Center in Munich as part of the Oktoberfest visit in 2014. The funds are used for German language classes for immigrants.

Transfer of knowledge – passing on expertise

At the SOS Vocational Training Center in Nuremberg, MAN is sponsoring the education of socially disadvantaged young people as they qualify to become industrial mechanics, machine operators, electricians, carpenters, and cooks. Since 2011 MAN has made it possible for a number of young people to receive vocational training. At present we are sponsoring three vocational trainees. The center provides support to a total of almost 400 disadvantaged young people from more than 30 different countries as they start their working lives, helping them build a brighter future.

Best wishes from MAN – SOS Children’s Villages celebrates 60 years in Germany

In 2015, SOS Children’s Villages is celebrating 60 years of providing assistance to children and young people in Germany. Since it first opened its doors in Germany, more than ten thousand children have grown up in SOS Children’s Village families; hundreds of thousands more around the world have been helped by the non-profit association. A true reason to celebrate! To mark the start of its anniversary year, in February 2015 SOS Children’s Villages invited guests to circus-themed festivities in Munich.

Äthiopien

In Ethiopia we are supporting the professionals of tomorrow by funding a vocational-technical school.

Our partnership with SOS Children’s Villages began in 2008 with our sponsorship of the SOS Vocational Training College (VTC) in Kality, Ethiopia – an initiative that promises long-term benefits by focusing on education. MAN’s ongoing assistance has allowed the financing of several vocational programs – engine service and maintenance and drive-system and automotive mechanics – as well as the construction of an additional college building.

Some 60 graduates have completed the vocational program at the SOS Vocational Training College in Kality, Ethiopia. MAN provides funding for three vocational programs.

Not only have we contributed financial aid totaling €600,000 for investments and maintenance, but professional support and knowledge transfer as well. We have provided the accredited vocational college with access to an MAN expert to teach special training courses, not to mention MAN equipment to practice on in classes – such as axle drives, truck instrument systems, driver’s cabs, and even an entire truck. This assistance allows the young adults attending the VTC to receive a top-notch vocational-technical education. The success of the program is demonstrated by the almost 60 graduates who started careers as automobile mechanics in 2014, for example – paving the way for a brighter future.

In Spain we are taking young mechanics by the hand and showing them the world of MAN.

Nine automotive vocational trainees from SOS Children’s Villages in Spain spent a day at the MAN production facilities in Coslada, near Madrid, learning the basics of electromechanics for industrial vehicles. They were accompanied by an MAN expert, who was able to answer their many questions, show them around, and conduct an intensive training session. This offered the participants, aged between 16 and 20, an excellent introduction to the principles of electromechanics. The young people are part of an education initiative run by SOS Children’s Villages in Spain that supports teenagers who have limited opportunities in the regular labor market. In Spain MAN provides funding of €10,000 to various SOS Children’s Villages projects, including daycare facilities and programs to help young people and families.

Emergency aid – around the globe

In addition to our long-term international projects, we also provide assistance to people who have been caught up in acute local crises. For years now we have been supplying humanitarian aid around the world wherever it is most urgently needed. In many cases, a long-term partnership grows out of our assistance.

Rebuilding in Haiti

A humanitarian disaster also marked the start of our ongoing partnership in Haiti. What began in 2010 with two trucks to assist in rebuilding efforts has today grown into a well-established initiative. With our support, at the beginning of 2015 a new SOS Children’s Village was opened in Les Cayes in southern Haiti. It comprises 14 family homes and provides the children with plenty of space in which to recover. Currently, some 60 children live in the village.

In the immediate aftermath of the Haiti earthquake, top priority was given to emergency relief measures such as those shown here. Today MAN continues to assist in the rebuilding efforts and support three SOS Children’s Villages facilities in the island nation.

In the SOS Children’s Village in Croix-des-Bouquets, which is located to the east of Port-au-Prince, MAN contributed €40,000 in 2013 to pay the living and care expenses of seven children for an entire year. And we cover the costs for five teachers at the SOS Herman Gmeiner School in Santo on the outskirts of the capital city. More than 700 children receive their primary and secondary education at the school.

We are proud that our energetic emergency-relief efforts have grown into a long-term local partnership with SOS Children’s Villages. Rebuilding will continue for many years in Haiti – dependent on reliable outside assistance.
